Portrait painting is like meditation for me. Every day, I study someone’s face and then render them on a canvas. As with any meditation, the path to capturing a perfect likeness is fraught with distraction, doubt, mistakes—but it is also a practice full of grace, resonance, and determination. When I get the sense that a portrait is nearing completion, it feels like I am brushing up close to enlightenment.

The result of years of visual practice, my paintings brim with suggested edges, blurs of color and hints of structure that create a picture that seems completely real on the one hand, while retaining its brushed, painterly quality on the other.

I use acrylic paint, which can be smooth, rich, dynamic and subtle when wet, and which eventually dries into a thin, durable resin. Notably, it is non-toxic and free of vapors which is important as I work out of a home studio.
